Lithium NMC vs Lithium Iron phosphate (LiFePO₄)

A question that comes up frequently in the energy storage industry is the different Lithium Iron chemistries that are available today. The simple answer is that each chemistry has its pros and cons, but the two types that have surged forward in residential, commercial and utility scale systems are LiNiMnCoO2  (Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide referred to as Lithium NMC) and LiFePO₄ (Lithium iron phosphate).

The video below shows one major difference between these two types of batteries.... thermal runaway (or susceptibility to catching fire). The chance of this type of external damage is low. Furthermore, NMC battery modules from experienced manufacturers usually have several safety measures to minimize the risk of fire. However, it's a factor to consider when deciding on the type of battery for some applications.

I will expand this blog soon with more information, but I need to sleep now as its past my bed time :).
